Bank Holiday Calendar 2026–2027

A holiday date and an observed closure date can be different. There is also a distinction within the Federal Reserve itself: its Banks and Branches do not always follow the same Friday schedule as the Board of Governors. Use the calendar below to identify those differences, then confirm the schedule for your own branch and the service you need. A federal calendar is a planning reference rather than a guarantee of an individual location’s hours.

The Federal Reserve Holiday Calendar

The Federal Reserve’s K.8 calendar lists the following holiday dates for 2026 and 2027. Weekend dates are shown as the holiday itself; the notes below explain the Friday and Monday observances. The official Federal Reserve reference is linked in our bank hours guide.

2026 Holiday Dates

  • New Year’s Day — January 1
  • Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. — January 19
  • Washington’s Birthday — February 16
  • Memorial Day — May 25
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day — June 19
  • Independence Day — July 4, a Saturday
  • Labor Day — September 7
  • Columbus Day — October 12
  • Veterans Day — November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day — November 26
  • Christmas Day — December 25

2027 Holiday Dates

  • New Year’s Day — January 1
  • Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. — January 18
  • Washington’s Birthday — February 15
  • Memorial Day — May 31
  • Juneteenth National Independence Day — June 19, a Saturday
  • Independence Day — July 4, a Sunday
  • Labor Day — September 6
  • Columbus Day — October 11
  • Veterans Day — November 11
  • Thanksgiving Day — November 25
  • Christmas Day — December 25, a Saturday

The U.S. Office of Personnel Management explains that Washington’s Birthday is the legal holiday name for federal employees, even though other institutions may use other names. Keeping that label here helps you compare the lists without mistaking a naming difference for an additional holiday.

When a Holiday Falls on a Weekend

For a Saturday holiday, Federal Reserve Banks and Branches remain open on the preceding Friday, while the Board of Governors closes. For a Sunday holiday, all Federal Reserve offices close on the following Monday. OPM’s rule for most federal employees treats the preceding Friday as the holiday when the date falls on Saturday, and the following Monday when it falls on Sunday. That Saturday distinction is why a general federal employee calendar cannot answer every Federal Reserve opening question.

Independence Day in 2026 illustrates the difference. July 4 falls on Saturday. On Friday, July 3, Federal Reserve Banks are open but the Board is closed; OPM lists July 3 as the observed holiday for most federal employees. Avoid treating the Friday observance as a universal statement about every banking location.

The same distinction applies on June 18, 2027, before Saturday’s Juneteenth holiday, and December 24, 2027, before Saturday’s Christmas holiday: the Reserve Banks are open and the Board is closed. By contrast, July 4, 2027 falls on Sunday, so the Reserve Banks and Board close Monday, July 5.

There is a year-end detail worth checking separately. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1. Its preceding Friday is December 31, 2027: the Reserve Banks remain open, while the Board closes, and OPM lists that Friday as the observed holiday for most federal employees. Check the next year’s calendar as well when an errand falls at the end of December.

What Stays Open

Separate your branch visit from the task you want to complete. If you are considering an ATM or mobile banking instead, check whether that option can handle the particular task and whether any access restrictions apply. Do not use a lobby closure date alone to decide what you can accomplish remotely. Equally, do not take access to an account as confirmation that every step of a transaction is complete.

Write down the specific service you need before comparing schedules. If you need someone to assist you, verify that service directly. This keeps the calendar useful without asking it to answer questions about an individual branch, machine or account that it does not cover.

Planning Around a Bank Holiday

Start with the holiday date, then check the weekend rule and the organization named in the calendar. Confirm your own branch’s schedule separately and leave time to resolve any uncertainty before the holiday. If a task has a deadline, check the applicable timing directly rather than working it out from an opening time alone.

When combining banking with other errands, our holiday hours guide provides shopping context and links to the OPM federal holiday reference. Keep each destination’s confirmation beside the date in your plan, so a federal observance does not become an assumption about an unrelated business.
