Shopping Mall Hours
Malls are one of the most misunderstood categories when it comes to hours, because a mall actually keeps several overlapping schedules at once. The concourse, the anchor department stores, the restaurants and the movie theater can all open and close at different times. Learning how these layers fit together is the key to a smooth visit — and to not standing at a dark entrance while a restaurant on the far side is still serving.
Concourse Hours: The Common Schedule
Most enclosed shopping malls keep common-area (concourse) hours of roughly 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, with shorter Sunday hours of about 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The interior specialty shops — clothing, accessories, gifts and the like — generally follow these concourse hours closely, since their leases often require them to be open whenever the mall is. If you are browsing generally, the concourse hours are the number you want.
The Exceptions: Anchors, Food and Entertainment
Several tenants deliberately break from the concourse schedule because they have their own exterior entrances:
- Anchor department stores may open earlier or close later than the mall corridor and often run independent holiday hours.
- Restaurants and food courts frequently open before the shops for breakfast or lunch and may serve after the concourse closes.
- Movie theaters, gyms and entertainment venues keep late hours tied to showtimes and classes, long after the retail wing goes dark.
This is why you might find a mall restaurant serving dinner while the shops beside it are already gated. If your destination is an anchor store, a gym or a restaurant, use its own hours — not the mall’s — to plan, and look for the exterior entrance nearest to it.
Holiday and Seasonal Mall Hours
Malls transform around the winter holidays, extending concourse hours late into the evening throughout December and staying open exceptionally late in the final days before the biggest gift-giving holiday. On the flip side, malls are among the properties most likely to close entirely on major national holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. The National Retail Federation’s holiday and seasonal trends research shows how dramatically foot traffic concentrates at year’s end — and mall hours expand to match.
Get the Timing Right
Before a mall trip, decide what you actually need. For general browsing, the concourse hours are your guide. For a specific store, confirm that shop’s hours. For dinner and a movie, ignore the mall schedule and check the restaurant and theater directly. And around any holiday, verify first.
